Article illustrations from my final project

Friday, May 14th, 2010

I’m working hard on my final school project, but thought I might show a few of my illustrations. Basically they’re all article illustrations, but specifically for the internet newspaper pol.dk (Danish). I’ll post more when I get the time

Bosses need to be caring and tough at the same time

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

One of the last illustrations from my school project that ends this friday. It’s from an article about how your boss should be tough enough to fire employees when necessary, but also be considerate and caring.

Samuel Beckett caricature

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

I asked my teacher to give me another caricature assignment. He told me to do Samuel Beckett, and at first I didn’t remember how he looked, but when I googled him I immediately remembered his face. And what a face he had!

article illustration - school assignment

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

I’m attending a course in school where we’re dabbling with the fantastic world of article illustration. For many illustrators this seems to be the main line of work, so It’s not something to ignore.
I rather like the idea of having to sum up an entire article with just one picture (I know, of course that you could just as easily build your illustration with many different pictures). It’s different from the experience I’ve had with infographics in the sense that most infographics are there exclusively to shed light upon a subject and to objectively explain. The cartoonist is more likely to project a statement or point of view into the illustration.

The article behind this illustration is about how suburban homeowners buy an increasingly amount of motorised garden tools, even with the most diminutive of gardens and lawns (originally from the Danish newspaper Politiken, and written by Claus Bøje). It has a certain focus on the noise that the machines make, and how you’re no longer able to hear the birds. I thought it would be funny to show the sounds of the machines, and not showing them at all. The deafening noises are shown competing with loud typography and colours that battle fiercly.

Drawing on wood

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

I’ve been practising with drawing on different kinds of wood. Instead of doing it in photoshop I thought it would be a good exercise to get in touch with the material.

This a a leftover piece of kitchen table which I sanded down and with a fine brush, acryllic paint and some markers, drew this simple image. After that I used water color and a white posca to add some hilights.
I didn’t want to crowd the image too much, and I also wanted the texture from the wood to be visible.
It was also fun sanding down the clouds, and working with transparency in a whole new way. I guess I take photoshop for granted sometimes.

This picture was actually made from a mistake. I started out with the outlined things covering the left side of the picture, but it came out really dull, so I tried sanding it down and covering it with an ink-wash. After sanding that down as well, it started looking as a nice basis to build on. I took a sketch i had of the rat with the handle and painted it in. Afterwards I painted the black blobs (to cover up ugly spots). Finally, I took some tools and carved into the plyood, as you can  see on the house and the pencil. I like how this came out, because I can see the different stages and also that I continued to work on it instead of throwing it away.

playing with ink

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

I’m really getting back to my analogue roots these days, and I’ve been playing around with some ink. I like the high contrast the black/white images gives, and there’s something about filling out blanks with a real bruh that just isn’t the same when working on the computer

Illustration course in school

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

I’m currently attending a course in school where I’m working with developing a new personal style in my drawings. I’ve become very inspired by Maurice Sendak’s classic ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ and decided to make some fan art with my own characters depicting a scene from the Book. Let the wild rumpus begin!

Portfolio-book

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

I made this book as my ‘bachelor’ at the Danish Design School spring ‘08

It’s a collection of my professional illustration work at the time, told by a collection of characters I created.

The lab is one of the spreads from the book. I’ve removed the text.
